BMW's factories were intensely bombed throughout the war and its remaining West German amenities ended up banned from developing motor automobiles or aircraft once the war. The business survived by building pots, pans, and bicycles. In 1948, BMW restarted bike manufacturing. BMW resumed car output in Bavaria in 1952 with the BMW 501 luxury saloon.
